Understanding the Global Shift in Power and the Urgency of Reclaiming Our True History

The world is witnessing a significant shift in the order of power, and for many, this is causing a sense of anxiety and uncertainty. As we observe the unraveling of established structures, some find it difficult to grasp or articulate exactly what is happening. The truth is, much of this confusion stems from how we have treated history—by hiding it, lying about it, and whitewashing it to create false narratives that have shaped our understanding of the world.

For centuries, the history of many peoples, particularly those of African descent, has been deliberately distorted or erased. This whitewashing was not just an act of historical revisionism; it was a tool of power, designed to maintain the dominance of certain groups by devaluing others. By presenting a sanitized version of history, those in power were able to perpetuate a system that justified inequality, exploitation, and oppression.

However, as the global order shifts, these false narratives are being challenged. We are at a pivotal moment where the truth is coming to light, and it is becoming increasingly clear that we must confront the past to make sense of the present and to shape a just and equitable future.

This is where the Sankofa philosophy becomes profoundly relevant. Originating from the Akan people of Ghana, Sankofa is often symbolized by a bird looking backward while flying forward. It teaches us that in order to move forward, we must first look back and reclaim the lessons of our history. By understanding where we come from, we can better navigate where we are going.

In the context of the current global shift, Sankofa urges us to confront the realities of our shared history, no matter how uncomfortable they may be. We must acknowledge the lies and omissions that have shaped our worldview and work to correct them. This process of “going back to fetch” the truth is not just about setting the historical record straight—it is about healing, empowerment, and creating a future that is informed by a more accurate and inclusive understanding of the past.

As we move through these uncertain times, the work of deconstructing internalized racism becomes even more critical. By recognizing and unlearning the false narratives that have been imposed upon us, we can begin to rebuild our identities, our communities, and our societies on a foundation of truth.
