Why We Need a Paradigm Shift in Discussions Around Deconstructing Internalized Racism

It’s time we start holding critical discussions around deconstructing internalized racism by embracing a paradigm shift. Racism, at its core, is rooted in hate, and hate is a full-time job. It consumes one’s energy, both mentally and physically, leaving no room for creativity or innovation.

When a mind is preoccupied with hatred, it becomes consumed by destructive thoughts that erode one’s potential to think creatively or contribute positively to society. This isn’t just an emotional burden; it’s a cognitive one. Individuals who intentionally embrace racist ideologies, believing in the superiority of their white skin, are engaging in what can be termed as “Narcissistic Racism.” This mindset is not only toxic but also self-limiting.

The Destructive Impact of Racism and Hatred:

  • Mental Drain: Constantly harboring hateful thoughts is mentally exhausting, leading to stress, anxiety, and burnout. The mind’s capacity to focus on positive or creative endeavors diminishes as it remains fixated on maintaining superiority.
  • Physical Toll: The stress associated with sustained hatred can lead to physical health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and weakened immunity. This is because the body is in a constant state of “fight or flight,” which takes a severe toll over time.
  • Stunted Creativity: A mind filled with hate has little room for innovation or new ideas. The focus on negative, destructive thinking blocks the cognitive processes necessary for problem-solving, creativity, and growth.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) teaches us that our thoughts directly influence our emotions and behaviors. When thoughts are dominated by hatred, the resulting emotions are negative and destructive, leading to behaviors that reinforce these harmful beliefs. This cycle of destructive thinking can be incredibly damaging, not just to the individual, but to society as a whole.

Racism is a socialized tool—taught, internalized, and indoctrinated over time. Many people don’t realize that these beliefs are not innate; they are learned and reinforced by societal structures. It’s crucial to understand that deconstructing internalized racism isn’t just about changing individual thoughts—it’s about dismantling the systems that perpetuate these harmful beliefs.

As we approach mid-October 2024, I’ll be offering specialized coaching sessions focused on deconstructing internalized racism. These sessions will explore how hatred has been internalized and provide tools to unlearn these destructive patterns. By challenging these ingrained beliefs, we can open the door to creativity, innovation, and a healthier, more inclusive society.
